The mobility scooter contributes to people’s lives by providing them the opportunity to stay mobile if their physical abilities prevent them from walking long distances. The desire to modernise the mobility scooter market with a new concept follows from the observation that the current vehicles have safety issues, not only for the user, but also for bystanders. In addition, the mobility scooter suffers from a negative image. In cooperation with the Delft start up Scoozy we redefined the mobility scooter concept to improve its position in society and make it attractive for a broader target group.

 

How to design a mobility scooter that allows for different kinds of interaction with its surroundings?

The challenge for a mobility scooter is that it should function in entirely different contexts. It moves among pedestrians as well as in traffic, consequently  desiring different kinds of interaction with its surroundings. Among pedestrians, it should be human, equal (perhaps even vulnerable) and allow for interaction with other people, yet among traffic it should still feel protective and safe to take it to higher speeds.

The result of this project is Scoozy, a concept with smart safety features and a re-arranged package layout that raises the optical balance of the vehicle to a human level. Besides this it explores new ways to improve the customizability of the platform, not only for functional purposes, but also for a touch of personalisation. The active position of the user contributes to an attentive character and moves the vehicle’s design away from a moving lazy armchair to a humane tool to explore. Always ready to go out for a ride with others.
