Online Strategy

Redesigng social democracy

Recent developments have rendered the classical institutions relying on 'Wise men, Backroom meetings and Mutual respect' obsolete while hitherto marginal populist movements suddenly grab vast parts of the electorate.

"This will be more than a footnote in the history of the PvdA"
Felix Rottenberg, Dutch politician, Independent Thinktank

How should a Social Democratic Thinktank communicate and engage with the On-Line world to encourage participation and debate.

Our reframers teamed up with new media researchers, information architects alongsside with the political specialists from the WBS in search for a effective strategy to transform the WBS into a Global Social Democratic Hub: a platform that is open to contributions, participations and collective action for and by anyone who feels like it, whether being Social Democrat or not. The team researched the Social Democratic context and delivered an interaction model plotting presenting, sharing and editing information against  three levels of control resulting in the 9 WBS modes of interaction. The premise is that a truely Social Democrat will neither fear or surpress being open to anyone and should take care that alle 9 modes are adressed with tools, products and media. As a result the WBS website has been completely rebuild along these lines: Using the Drupal Open Source CMS it will  allow users to play, apply for, earn or be invited into certain roles granting them different levels off access and engagement.

Framework with the 9 modes for Social Democratic Interaction

Redesigned Website

Digital Essay: Together with digital developpers Infotude, we added a neat new 'content type': a Digital Essay that was launched early 2013 by WBS director Monika Sie, facing a full house in cultural debating centre 'de Rode Hoed'. On this occasion she presented the conclusions of a two year investigative project in search of the Values Dutch citizens consider essential in their daily lives. The 'Van waarde' project analysed how these values came under threat, and what the social democratic answers should be. At the same occasion, the Social Democratic party (PvdA) presented a resolution containing the consequenses the PvdA steering commitee drew from the research project.

The 'Van waarde' project is boiled down into an essay published by Van Gennep. The book contains Monika Sie Dhian Ho's full text. In addition to this beautifull book, KVD and Infotude developped the digital version. This is what E-books should have offered in the first place: The text is inserted with images, annotations, audio- and video clips. These insertions are obscured, but may pop up 'on command' at a readers' requests by clicking on the cues in de sidebar.

The 'Van waarde' digital essay resides inside the WBS website

One of the key ideas in the WBS on-line strategy, is to transform the WBS audience from spectators into contributors. The 'Van waarde' project does exactly that: 'Van waarde' is the result of a massive amount of interviews, debates and discussions. But its results are not fixed: as the debate goes on, also the digital essay may become a source of input since we have added DISQUS to the digital essay: the sophisticated global commenting platform that affords contsructive commenting.

We are co-moderating the DISQUS forum and we are very exited to be witnessing the Digital Essay in action with the WBS visitors! Grab your Ipad, smartphone or laptop and comment!
